1.- 2. - 1 was taken in a lull in the
action. The serenity of it belies the severity of our situation. The Japs had started kamakazi attacks on our convoy, which continued for 48
hours. They sank 8 ships out of our convoy, the Navy gunners shot 25 of
them down. 3 of them close enough for me to photograph hitting the
water.
3. - Bombed out church, nothing's sacred
in war.
4. - I have a conversation with one of the
local lasses.
5. - War or no war, the kids had to go to
school.
6. - Primitive locomotive. It
wouldn't do well pulling a 100 car train back home - or navigating some of the
grades out in our western Mountain States.
7. - Local Militia
8. - Hospital Personnel.
9. - Old Glory and Phillipine flags replaced the rising sun.
10. - USS Gen. A.E. Anderson, the ship that carried a boat load of returnees home. They had spent any where from 2-1/2 to 3 years down there. Also on board were the 500 "Ghost Soldiers" that had been rescued from a jap POW camp. When we sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge we were met by all the fire boats in the harbor with water spewing high in the air, and every ship in the harbor blowing their horns. We all knew the welcome was for the POWs, but we all soaked a little of it up.
